The Centre's knowledge and competence regarding shellfish is available for commercial exploitation, while the Centre translates new knowledge into practice.
The Danish Shellfish Center is home to research, experimental and development projects, be it their own projects or in cooperation with industry research institutions, organizations and universities. In addition, the center building and equipment facilities.
The activities of the Danish Shellfish Center are aimed at both environmental and economic sustainability.
History
The Danish Shellfish Centre was established in 2002 based on the "Plan for the future of fisheries in the Limfjord," which in 2001 was drafted by the Ministry of Food and Environmental and the Energy Ministry in cooperation with Viborg, North Jutland and Ringkoebing County. The current facility opened in early summer 2004 as a result of a larger project financed by EU funds, the Danish Government, Viborg and Morsoe Kommune.
Basic thoughts on the plan for the future of fisheries in the Limfjord demanded a knowledge and technology boost and the DSC started a number of projects with particular focus on establishing alternative forms of mussels and oysters. The projects were funded by the European fund for fisheries development and in the wake of the projects grew a whole new profession in terms of farming mussels.
Since its foundation the DSC has participated in various projects funded from several different sources and dealing with a variety of topics from basic research on parasites of crabs to mapping populations of eelgrass.
